Introduction
During the festive days of Christmas, an event occurs that becomes a symbol of hope and faith in miracles.

Opening Scene
The film opens with the enchanting sounds of "Shchedryk" as we see the bustling streets of Vienna adorned with Christmas decorations. Families gather, children play in the snow, and the spirit of the holiday season is palpable. Amidst this festive backdrop, a group of dedicated individuals prepares for a unique event that intertwines history, culture, and the power of community.

Main Plot
The film "Vertep. Despite of" not only offers viewers a glimpse into the world of miracles but also discovers the personal stories of people involved into organisation of the performance, highlighting the topics of integration and unity.

Narrative Structure
The documentary discovers the topic of the Christmas traditions in the form of a volunteer Christmas theatre, when people unite, quarrels are forgotten and together they experience and create a wonderful cultural event, preserving and sharing traditions and folk art. The movie draws a parallel between the Ukrainian tradition of the Christmas theatre called “vertep” and the Austrian tradition of “Sternsingen”.

Main Idea
"Vertep. Despite of" is a film about unity, perseverance, and the power of belief. First of all, it is the film - “introduction” and film - “opening” for the wide opening audience about a cultural phenomenon of a Christmas thater staged by the Ukrainians in Austria, Vienna, in the Christmas time. Through the lens of our Vertep, which tells the story of Christmas, we explore broader themes of freedom, survival, and the enduring hope that sustains us. The documentary interweaves personal stories of the participants, each of whom has faced their own struggles and triumphs. The film transports viewers to a world where miracles can happen, giving us faith in a better future.

 

The movie "Vertep: Despite of" relies on the events surrounding the preparation of the performance “Vertep with Gareth Jones”, curated by Yana Gryniv. The performance was based on the script by vertep script writer Tetyana Shpaykher. The English translation was completed by Mark Klenk and Olga Zhminko, while Yuliia Mykhalska directed the staging. Costumes were provided by the Ukrainian brand Gaeva, known for its modern clothing with ethnic motifs.
