4600 Nocturnes Ukrainian Photo Days Austria is a collective exhibition of Ukrainian black-and-white photography, presented as part of Favorite Fall, one of Austria’s most important annual cultural festivals.
The exhibition opens on the 4,600th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The title of the project brings together a specific historical dimension with the language of art. Nocturne is a musical and artistic genre traditionally associated with the night as a space of silence, contemplation, memory, and inner experience. Black-and-white photography becomes a natural visual language for this experience. Deprived of colour, it draws attention to light and shadow, rhythm, texture, gesture, and the silence of the image. It is precisely within the tonal transitions between black and white that a space for reflecting on reality emerges — a reality that resists simple definitions and cannot be reduced to categories of absolute certainty.
The exhibition brings together 34 Ukrainian photographers from different parts of Ukraine and diaspora. Their works reflect diverse artistic practices and personal stories while collectively forming a multifaceted visual chronicle of contemporary Ukrainian experience.
The project is curated and organized by Art Contact Ukraine in partnership with Kyivphotos-Hall 2012, Das LOT and Favorite Fall festival. For the third consecutive year, Art Contact Ukraine presents Ukrainian artistic projects as part of the Favorite Fall festival, which annually brings together dozens of galleries and independent art spaces, more than 200 artists, curators, collectors, and art researchers, as well as thousands of visitors. The festival transforms Brotfabrik Wien into one of the most dynamic hubs for international cultural dialogue.
4600 Nocturnes is an exhibition about time that cannot be measured by the calendar alone. It is a story about a light that does not disappear even during the longest night, and about photography as a way of preserving memory, bearing witness, and finding traces of humanity in the space between darkness and light.
